Understanding Men's Hair Loss and Thinning

Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss among men. It affects approximately 50% of men by age 50, often starting as early as their twenties. This progressive condition typically begins with a receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or both.

The Science Behind Male Hair Loss

Hair loss in men primarily stems from genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone binds to follicle receptors, gradually shrinking them until they can only produce thin, short hairs before stopping completely. This process happens in predictable patterns reflected in the Norwood Scale.

DHT's Role in Hair Loss

The hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the primary culprit in male pattern baldness. Men with genetic sensitivity have hair follicles that react differently to normal DHT levels. When DHT binds to these follicles, it gradually miniaturizes them over time, shortening their growth cycle until they can only produce thin, wispy hairs before stopping completely.

The Progressive Timeline

Male pattern baldness follows a predictable progression on the Norwood Scale. Most men don't realize that visible thinning only becomes apparent after losing approximately 50% of hair density in an area. Without intervention, this miniaturization continues, eventually leading to permanent follicle death. Early intervention is crucial—the sooner you address hair loss, the more options you have.

Beyond Genetics

While genetics determine your predisposition to hair loss, several factors accelerate the timeline: chronic stress increases cortisol production, pushing more follicles into the resting phase; poor circulation limits nutrient delivery to the scalp; and certain medications can disrupt normal hair cycles. At BHR, we address both the genetic factors and these accelerating influences.
